We held Talk Like a Pirate Weekend on the Columbus Santa Maria September 15th & 16th.
Weather was perfect during the day. It got cold at night so the few people who had planned to sleep on the ship slept indoors instead.
I took over steerage. I added several navigational instruments from my own collection to the ones already on the Santa Maria. That let me contrast navigation in 1492 and the 1690s.
I also had my cannon set up beside the ship's so I could show how each one was loaded. Mission was set up in his regular spot midships with his pirate surgeon display.
At the fore of the ship we had cooking and a table with certificates, coloring pages, and doubloons for the kids.
Word is getting out about the battle. Most people arrived between 1 and 2. The ship was very crowded then. Hardly andone arrived before noon or after 3:30.
We had to do a stripped-down battle with three people in the Black Sheep, three people returning fire, a crew on the mortar and the howitzer. It was enough to make a lot of noise.
The jetty surrounding the ship picked up a lot of silt last year and is now overgrown with weeds. When we were beyond it we could not be seen from the ship. To get around this we let the boat drift at the end of the jetty.
The ship took in around $2,000 over the weekend which makes it a very successful event.
